How to locate a lost or stolen Apple iPhone

Hello there, I just like to share this story from The New York Times about how NYPD officer got the stolen Apple iPhone back to its owner. The feature that was used to track that iPhone is really great and one of the reasons why you should choose an Apple iPhone.

How does it work? You first have to enable the "Find My iPhone" feature in iCloud settings which is free for iPhones running iOS 5.0 or later.

• Locate your iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, or Mac on a map

• Display a message on the screen
• Play a sound for two minutes at full volume (even if your device is set to silent)
• Remotely lock your device

• Remotely wipe your device to erase your personal data


Your iPhone should be connected to data service either via cellular data or WiFi and to start tracking it, you will need to sign in to icloud.com using a computer or you can use another Apple device that has Find My iPhone app and key in your Apple ID and a map will show the location of your iPhone. This feature is also available for iPad, iPod touch and Mac. See more.

Thanks for sharing this! Now I know why I should turn the "Location Service" On on my iPhone 4. Find My iPhone wont work without that turning on. Just for security reason as well I don't feel comfortable that someone is able track me.

I misplaced my iPod touch and I can't remember where it is. Is it possible to locate it even if its a jailbroken one?
