I'm finally ready to ditch my old Moto freebie phone I got for my Sprint contract and I'm trying to decide between an iPhone and one of the new HTC models (touch pro2, diamond2, hero) coming to the market. I haven't actually held any of the new HTC models yet so that will be a big part of my decision but I am new to these smart phones and the contracts required have me really doing some legwork to determine which is best for me.
I'll probably ask some more detailed questions as I go here but in general which one would you go with and why?

iPhone vs HTC

Generally speaking it's a tough call. HTC has a lot going for it and several different directions to go especially considering the Andriod and WM operating systems. Their phones are super sexy and I plan on getting one sooner than later.
It seems people are desperate to find something to top the iPhone in the North American market. While there are arguably better options in Europe and especially Asian countries such as Japan, we really don't have an iPhone killer yet.
The two things that you can get with an HTC phone that you can't with an iPhone are a replaceable battery and an actual keyboard. For some people the touch screen keyboard is a deal breaker and I can fully understand that. The permanent battery with the iPhone is nothing short of insanity to me. I understand they do it because they can but it drives me nuts.
The apps really seem to be driving the smart phone market and right now the iPhone app store is unmatched.
If you have an specific features you'd like to cover just post 'em up.
Welcome to the forum.

I know there are some big supporters of windows mobile but I'd stay as far away as possible if i were you. Luckily that's not the only option with HTC.

If I am concerned about the desing (which I surely am) then I will go for the slim phone that is the iPhone although its price is high.

For me, I will consider the features and quality of each phones. Both these phones offer a wide variety of apps and functions but we need to look at the price too as these two are not always having low prices. It depends on the taste and the income of a buyer to choose between these two

Here's my slightly biased recommendation (I've only ever used the iPhone, not anything from HTC).
Unless you need your phone for a specific purpose like email, business, web browsing or whatever, it's best to go for the iPhone. There are a ton of smartphones out there that do one thing well, but aren't that useful as an all-purpose phone. The iPhone isn't great for email or anything requiring a tactile keyboard, but it's probably the best all-round phone out there right now.

Every phone has its own features and operating system
HTC Hero has Android OS whereas iPhone 3GS has Mac OS, that's the reason every device has a slight different capability, HTC Hero supports Java via third party application whereas iPhone not, I think that's a slight advantage though then this will let an owner to get games and apps in the form of .jar or .jad files, java files also small in size and it is easy to download and furthermore this will let more spaces available if you choose HTC Hero but iPhone has some sort of larger sized apps and games which occupy more spaces and this leads to small availability of storage spaces, if you're a photographer I assume you to pick HTC Hero as it has a 5 megapixel camera quality in comparison to iPhone 3GS which has 3.15 megapixel only

From the start, the newest and thinnest addition to the iPhone family has out-slimmed the comparatively bulky HTC Desire with the iPhone 4’s dimensions of 115 x 59 x 9mm fitting into more pockets than the Desire’s 119 x 60 x 12mm size.
Weighing in at 137g, the iPhone 4 is slightly heavier than the 135g HTC Desire though.
Both handsets have relied on their screens to be a wow-factor, and we’ve loved using both the Desire and iPhone 4.
Size-wise the HTC Desire offers a bit more screen than the iPhone 4 with a 3.7 inch screen over Apple’s 3.5 inches. This may not sound like much, but can make watching video just that bit more comfy.
The iPhone 4 has a brilliant screen res of 960 x 640 against the Desire’s 480 x 800 resolution, which is still good, but not quite as good as the iPhone 4.
Under the bonnet, Apple has given its software a new name, and has included iOS4 in its new iPhone. Along with the new name is the new multitasking feature, allowing you to switch between open apps almost as fast as you can decide which one to use.
For those with an organised mind, iOS4 also allows you to organize apps into folders.
On the flip side, the HTC Desire runs Android 2.1, with an upgrade to Froyo 2.2 coming to a Desire near you soon.
We’ve been long-time Android fans, and the open source nature of the Desire’s software gives it a leg-up against Apple.
With the Froyo update, the Desire is expected to run over 400% quicker, and will also support Flash 10.1 which is a bone of contention with Apple.

Delving into each handset’s connectivity, both phones look quite similar on the surface with Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, GPRS and MMS capabilities in both handsets.
The Desire has been constant in its call reliability from day one though, and this is again where Apple have stumbled somewhat.
The iPhone 4 drops its phone signal when your palm covers the lower left corner of the phone- like when you hold it with your left hand for example. This obviously isn’t good for a phone, with Apple simply telling users to hold their device differently to counter the problem.
Both the iPhone 4 and HTC Desire pack 5 megapixel cameras with LED flash and auto focus. Both take decent shots, but aren’t number one in the market for this feature.
To store your pictures, the iPhone 4 offers you 16GB or 32GB of internal storage compared to the HTC Desire which is just a tiny 512MB. However to make up for the lack of internal storage, the HTC Desire comes with a microSD card slot, allowing you to store up 32GB of memory, definitely upping the ante on the number of songs and snaps you’re carrying around with you.
The iPhone 4 is without a doubt an impressive piece of kit, and does have a bit more street cred than any HTC Device on the market today. Delving into each phone’s differences though, the Desire has a better OS in Android, and superior reliability, which is important in a phone. We’re giving this one to the HTC Desire, but in reality both phones will do you proud. But don’t take our work for it, take a look at other mobile phone reviews.
