Most network providers use 850, 900, 1900 or 2100 MHz 3G frequencies which Apple designed iPhones to work on and which unfortunately T-Mobile doesn't have.
The T-Mobile CEO, Philipp Humm, hopingly said to Ina Fried of AllThingsD during the CES 2012 event that the company will eventually get the future iPhones since technology is constantly changing. One of the reason would be the existence of the Petaband chipset that support all 3G UMTS networks in Europe and US.
Do you think the next iPhone will have that Pentaband chipset integrated or T-Mobile should be better start improving their network instead?
